Atomic processes involved in precipitate nucleation in aged aluminium alloys
Atom probe field ion microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy are now allowing direct observations to be made of the actual atomic processes involved in the nucleation or precipitates in aged aluminum alloys. Special interest has been shown in solute clustering that may precede nucleation and in the effects of microalloying elements. What remains now is to obtain a precise understanding of the role of the vacant lattice sites on these processes.
