Stereology for recovering grain boundary plane distributions in the crystal frame
It is shown that the S-v(Deltag,(n) over cap (A)) may be recovered by extending Adams' stereology to an original framework. Essential to this new framework is the unique misorientation coordinate frame, which is introduced and defined. It is shown that in general, the function S-v(Deltag,(n) over cap (A)) may be approximated from a single section plane provided that no strong texture exists, and that the section plane is large enough to provide many bi-crystals of all types of significant misorientations Deltag. Although the method of recovery preserves the locations of probable grain boundary habit planes, it is shown that the method tends to underestimate function values of S-v(Deltag,(n) over cap (A)). It is shown that one can compensate for this underestimation error by measuring extremely high numbers of grain boundary traces.
