Development of shape memory alloy fiber reinforced smart FGMs
This paper reports the fabrication method and mechanical properties of shape memory alloy (SMA) fiber / plaster smart functionally graded materials (FGMs). Fe-Mn-Si-Cr SMA fibers are subjected to pretensile strain at room temperature. The SMA fiber / plaster smart FGMs were fabricated, in which the shape recovery strain or volume fraction of SMA fibers was varied from place to place. Microhardness test and three-point bending test were performed for the mechanical property characterization. Large anisotropic mechanical property was observed, dependent on the volume fraction of SMA fibers. Thus, it is possible to improve the bending strength of the SMA fiber / plaster smart FGM so that better mechanical property could be achieved by considering the distribution of SMA fibers.
