Chemical comparability in Al2O3-LaPO4 composite system was systematically investigated. A new design method of machinable ceramic composites was proposed, which applies the graded-structure concept to the design of machinable Al2O3 ceramics. Machinable Al2O3/LaPO4 functionally graded materials were fabricated and characterized using powder layering and hot-pressing sintering.
