Control of lamellar arrangement in TiAl intermetallic compound by mechanical and thermal processes
Various processes were examined on a Ti-43mol%Al binary alloy to obtain oriented lamellar microstructure. The processes are based on hot working in the alpha single phase state and/or in the alpha + gamma two phase state and the heat treatments. It is found that more than half of the lamellar microstructure can be arranged within 30 degrees from the specimen surface by these processes. It is also shown that the orientation control of the larnellar microstructure in polycrystalline, TiAl intermetallic compound is effective to improve the creep resistance of this material.
