Resource-saving type high nitrogen steel (HNS) has been developed in NIMS by a pressurized ESR method. This material is a fully austenitic steel with not only high strength but also high corrosion resistance. In this study, localized corrosion behavior of HNS was investigated in both artificial seawater and seawater. The mechanism of improvement of corrosion property by the addition of nitrogen was also discussed.
