HQ Accelerator Effects on Cure Kinetics of DGEBA/MDA/GN/HQ System
The cure kinetics of DGEBA/MDA/GN/HQ system, GN as a reactive additive and HQ as an accelerator or a catalyst was investigated. The ratio of GN:HQ was 4:1 in part by weight. Kinetic studies were done by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From the relation of heat of reaction in DSC scan and conversion, it was found that the DGEBA/MDA/GN/HQ system followed the second order kinetics. Activation energy was lower than that of the system without HQ. The reaction of nitrile group (GN) with diamine and hydroxyl group resulted in decrease of cross-link and increase of chain length by the formation of -NRC(O)NH-. Therefore, the GN was expected to act as a chain extender. Hydrogen donor, HQ acted as an accelerator or a catalyst accelerated cure reaction at low temperature and lowered the activation energy. HQ also aided the ring opening of epoxide and promoted the reaction of the nitrile with diamine and hydroxyl group.
