Measurement of the Asphaltene and Resin Content of Crude Oils
Since the chemical constitution of asphaltic materials is not at all clear, they are classified mainly on the basis of their physical properties. In general, it is agreed, however, that the asphaltenes and resins are the most important asphaltic compounds of petroleum. In order to find the amount of asphaltenes, resins, and others, it is necessary to understand about the fundamental properties of crude oils. API gravity, density, and viscosity of Brookhaven oil (heavy crude oil) and DK-107 oil (light crude oil) have been collected. Also, a considerable amount of experimental data was collected in an effort to show whether the bulk viscosity is at all related to the onset of asphaltene flocculation. It was found that the concentration of asphaltenes in Brookhaven oil and DK-107 oil was affected by solvent type, pore size of membrane, the required time for separation, and solution temperature.
