Contraction of the Copolymer Gel of Maleic-Acid and Styrene in the Range of Degree of Ionization Above 0.5
The dependence of the volume of copolymer gel of maleic acid and styrene on the degree of ionization (alpha) was examined. The volume was found to increase with a for alpha smaller than about 0.5. The volume decreased with alpha, however, for alpha greater than 0.5. The experimental results clearly indicate that the dimensions of the polymers exhibit a maximum in the vicinity of alpha = 0.5.
