Synthesis and selected properties of anionic gemini surfactants
Three polyethylene glycols R(CH2CH2O)(m)CH2CH2R (I, m = 1, 2 or 3, R = OH) were brominated with PBr3 in MeCN at b. for 24 h to resp. bromides I (R = Br), etherified with p-HOC6H4C12H25 in presence of Bu4N+Br and NaOH to resp. diethers I (R = p-C12H25C6H4O) and sulfonated with ClSO3H/NaOH to resp. disulfonates I (R = p-C12H25-m-SO3NaC6H3O) studied for physicochem. properties and surface activity in aq. solns. The gemini surfactants produced showed lower crit. micelle concns. than the com. C12H25C6H4SO3Na surfactant.
