Influence of Structure and Interfacial Chemistry on the Permeability of Particle Clusters
The permeability of small (10 mu m) clusters of carbon black and larger (2 mm) clusters of silica particles was determined through sedimentation experiments. Examination of carbon black clusters composed of different types of particles illustrates the influence of particle morphology on cluster permeability. The influence of packing on permeability was examined using silica clusters of different densities. The effect of interfacial chemistry was addressed by soaking and sedimenting the particles in fluids or combinations of fluids having a range of polarity. The fraction of the cluster voids filled by host fluid during the soaking process was also calculated from the sedimentation data.
