Treatment of stabilized landfill leachate using peroxicoagulation process
Objective: The treatment of landfill leachate by peroxicoagulation (PC) method was carried out in a batch electrolytic reactor. Materials and Methods: The effect of operating conditions such as pH, voltage, anode area, cathode area, depth of immersion, inter electrode distance, H2O2 addition and feeding mode on the efficacy of PC was investigated. Results: It was demonstrated that PC can effectively degrade leachate organics. The process was very fast in the first 30 min and then slowed down till 90 min. The oxidation of organic materials in the leachate was pH dependent and the optimal pH was 3. The optimum operating conditions of the PC process for stabilized landfill leachate were observed as initial pH of 3, voltage of 10V, inter electrode distance of 4cm, depth of immersion of 6.8cm. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency under the reported conditions was 93%. The addition of H2O2 improved the COD removal efficiency by 1%. According to the results, PC can be used efficiently for the treatment of landfill leachate by using the proper operating conditions. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
