Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Thermoplastic Polyurethanes Modified with Polyamide-11
E-mail:
Polyamide-11 (PA-11) was added to two types of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs), ester-based TPU (ES-TPU) and ether-based TPU (ET-TPU), to modify the physical properties of the TPUs. A fine dispersion of the PA-11 plus an increase in the tensile modulus of the TPU/PA-11 blends with an increasing amount of PA-11 were observed without a significant decrease in the elongation at the break. The crystallization temperature (Tcc) of the hard segments of the TPU in the melt blends of TPU/PA-11 increased compared with that of the TPU in the solution blends. IN particular, the Tcc of the TPU in the melt blends of ES-TPU/PA-11 showed a large increase. However, the glass transition temperatures of the soft segments of the TPU in the TPU/PA-11 blends remained almost constant, implying that the phase separation of the soft and the hard segments of the TPU in the blends was unffected by the melt blending. Accordingly, it would appear that some level of exchange reaction occurred during the melt mixing of the TPU and the PA-11 and these reaction products facilitated the nucleation of the TPU crystallization. The ES-TPU/PA-11 blends seemed to undergo high level of exchange reaction compared with the ET-TPU/PA-11 blends during melt mixing due to the ester groups in the soft segments of the ES-TPU.
