It is shown that a common synthesis procedure of crystalline imogolite fibers may yield a fairly large fraction of amorphous proto-imogolite as a by-product. This amorphous product is easily overlooked in the characterization of imogolite dispersions. Careful removal of amorphous products allowed us to obtain a first clear electron micrograph of synthetic imogolite fibers.
