Influence of firing temperature on the color properties of orthoferrite PrFeO3
Orthoferrites belong to the large group of inorganic pigments and thanks to their excellent properties they have been widely used in various industries. Orthoferrite PrFeO3 with the perovskite structure was obtained in this work. This compound was synthesized with the solid state reaction by calcination in the temperature region 1000-1500 degrees C. The methods of thermal analysis were used for characterization of thermal behavior, formation and thermal stability of the tested orthoferrite. The main aim of this work was to study the influence of calcination temperature on the color properties of PrFeO3. The color properties of powdered samples and the samples applied into ceramic transparent glaze and organic matrix in mass tone were also studied. The tested samples can be described by different brown color hues depending on calcining temperature. The phase composition of the powdered compounds was studied by X-ray diffraction analysis and the results of the powdered samples prepared at lower temperatures informed about the presence of several-phases compound. Particle size distribution of the samples was observed in dependence on calcination temperature too. The values of mean particle size of tested orthoferrites are moved from 3.9 to 18.5 mu m. For preparation of orthoferrites with the excellent color properties the firing temperature 1200 degrees C is necessary. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
