Particles induced surface nanoroughness of titanium surface and its influence on adhesion of osteoblast-like MG-63 cells
Titanium is one of the most common materials employed for production of implants, which is due to its good biocompatibility. However, the colonization of titanium surface by osteoblast cells may be influenced by its roughness and therefore precise control of roughness of titanium surface as well as identification of its optimal value for growth of cells is of high importance. In this study the nanorough titanium surfaces were prepared on polished disks of TiAlV by two step method of deposition. In the first step TiAlV were coated by nanoparticles generated by gas aggregation sources. Such prepared films of nanoparticles were subsequently covered with a titanium overlayer. Different values of surface roughness in the range 1-100 nm were achieved by variation of the size and number of the nanoparticles. Such prepared surfaces were subsequently used for investigation of influence of roughness of titanium surfaces on the adhesion of human osteoblast-like MG-63 cells. It was found out that 7 days after seeding the highest number of adhering cells was observed for samples with root-mean-square roughness of 30 nm. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
