Frequency analysis of macrosegregation measurements and simulations
A statistically based method for the presentation and analysis of solidification macrosegregation measurements and predictions is proposed. In cases where measurements or predictions are arranged on a uniform grid and associated with a sub-volume of fixed size, the proposed approach mimics a cumulative distribution function (CDF) from which the volume fraction of the solidified casting above a given level of segregation can be determined. Illustrating this method in the presentation of recent reported macrosegregation measurements of a Sn-10wt%Bi alloy indicates the appearance of a power-law behavior in the positively segregated region of the distribution. This finding suggests that refinement of the grid density in experiments or simulations will lead to a continuing increase in the maximum measured or predicted segregation value. This conjecture is supported by creating CDF's for synthetic and numerically simulated measurements for the Sn-10%wtBi system. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
