Bicatalyst electrocatalytic reduction and oxidation of nitrite by Fe(II) and Cu(II) complexes in the same solution
The bicatalyst electrocatalytic reduction and oxidation of NO2-by a mixture of copper(II) and iron(II) complexes with the same ligand or different ligands showed that NO2- is oxidized to NO2- through the iron(II/III) complex redox couple, and NO2- is reduced to N2O through the copper(II/I) complex redox couple. These reactions can also be performed by iron(II) tris(5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline) and copper(II) bis(5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline) adsorbed on a glassy carbon electrode. A two-layer film of iron(II) complex and copper(II) complex adsorbed on a glassy carbon electrode was used as a comparison with the homogeneous bicatalyst system with Cu-II(bipy)(2) and Fe-11(phen)(3)(2+). The monomer and dimer of iron(III) 1,10-phenanthroline complexes show different reaction rates with NO2-.
