The heme content of a group of bacterial catalases has been reported to be about 0.5 per subunit, but this value is inconsistent with that suggested from structural considerations. The heme binding capacity of Bacillus stearothermophilus catalase I, which is a member of the bacterial catalases, was determined to be one heme per subunit by titration of apocatalase I with heme.
