Fuel cell electrodes prepared by e-beam evaporation of Pt compared with commercial cathodes: Electrochemical and DMFC behaviour
A study on the electrochemical response and on essays in a single direct methanol fuel cell with electrodes consisting in Pt films deposited on carbon is presented here. Two commercial electrodes with different catalyst loading and two elect-odes prepared by electron beam evaporation of Platinum have been studied under the same conditions. An increment in the electroactive surface area and a fuel cell performance comparable to those obtained using commercial electrodes is found. Besides, the power obtained per unit mass of catalytic material also increases. Therefore, it can be concluded that electron beam evaporation of Platinum on carbon support shows to be a suitable procedure to obtain efficient fuel cell electrodes.
