Calcium pimelate supported on TiO2 nanoparticles as isotactic polypropylene prodegradant
In this paper, the functionalization of TiO2 particles with pimelic acid is described; this molecule was extendedly used as a beta-phase nucleating agent and there were no previous reports about how it is chemically attached on TiO2 particles. A degradation study was conducted to observe the behavior of this filler. We observe that, this modified nanofiller promotes the degradation of the polymer, making it suitable to use as a prodegradant in polyolefins. The degradation was monitored by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, observing that the carbonyl index of the sample with the modified nanofiller was 20 % higher than the one without it. This behavior was present throughout the photodegradation process. The mechanical properties of the samples were characterized by DMA, revealing that the sample containing the modified nanofiller had a loss in the storage modulus while the sample without it had an increase with respect to the initial time of degradation.
