Coating of polylactide films to generate their antimicrobial properties
Polilactide film was coated with emulsan or metaquinones produced in situ by Acinetobacter calcoaceticus and Chitinophaga arvensicola bacteria on methylhydroxypropylcellulose (MHPC) and methylcellulose (MC) carriers and studied for antimicrobial properties against Bacillus atrophaeus, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus auresus, Escherichia coli and Citrobacter freundii bacteria. Menaquinones on MHPC showed good antimicrobial activity against M. luteus and B. atrophaeus while emulsan on MC showed microbicidal activity against M. luteus, S. aureus and B. atrophaeus. The B. atrophaeus cells were more sensitive to menaquinone and emulsan attacks than the M. luteus and S. aureus ones. The menaquinones on MHPC decreased also the growth of E. coli and C. freundii cells. The microbiocidal activity of emulsan against Gram-negative cells was higher when MHPC was used as carrier. The E. coli strain was more sensitive to emulsan and menaquinones than C. freundii one.
