Here, we report a novel electrochemical activation technique for a Cu-depleted apo-type laccase, MELAC, which was isolated from a compost metagenome. The Cu atoms in the active center of the laccase were removed during the purification process using an anion-exchange column. We demonstrate how the apotype laccase can be activated by an electrochemically generated monovalent Cu+ ion.
