Synthesis of perfluorinated ionomers and their anion exchange membranes
Perfluorinated ionomers (S-PFSO(2)NH(-)GCI-OH) and their anion exchange membranes (AEMs) were successfully synthesized from short side-chain perfluorosulfonamide polymer for the first time. S-PFSO2NH-GCI-OH ionomers well dissolved in many solvents, especially in low-boiling point solvents and formed a transparent solution. The wet membrane of S-PFSO2NH-GCI-OH displayed a well defined nano-phase separated structure with the ionic cluster dimension of 4-5 nm. S-PFSO2NH-GCI-OH membrane exhibited good hydroxide conductivity of 102 mS cm(-1) at 80 degrees C and excellent dimensional stability in water. Moreover, the membrane maintained 86.1% hydroxide conductivity and 87.5% IEC value after immersion in 8 M KOH at 80 degrees C over fifteen days. Alkaline membrane fuel cell using the perfluorinated ionomer as catalyst binder on the perfluorinated membrane exhibits power density of 138 mW cm(-2). This new synthetic strategy may be useful in designing more perfluorinated AEMs electrochemical devices with high comprehensive performance. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
