Analysis of toxic products of thermal decomposition and combustion of substrates used in the synthesis of polyurethanes
Ignition time, rate of heat secretion and total amt. of smoke were detd. by using a cone calorimeter for an cyanate, a polyol and a surfactant used for com. prodn. of polyurethanes. The ignition times were 23, 36 and 32 s, resp., and rates of heat secretion 247.7, 675.2 and 498.8 kW/m(2), resp. The combustion of polyol released approx. 20 times less of smoke than combustion of other substrates. The chem. compn. of flue gases was detd. by IR spectrofotometty with Fourier transformation and gas chromatog. coupled with mass spectrometry. C oxides and H2O were main prods. of combustion. Some hydrocarbons were also present in trace amts.
