Radiative Lifetime Measurements in Gaseous Cucl2
We have measured the radiative lifetimes of the (IIu)-I-2 and (2) Delta(g) states of the CuCl2 molecule in the gas phase. We have assigned an upper limit of 70 ns for the (IIu)-I-2 effective lifetime, while the lifetime of the (2) Delta(g) state has been determined to be (3.0 +/- 0.5) x 10(-6) s. The short lifetime of the (IIu)-I-2, state makes a chemical laser based upon the (IIu)-I-2 --> X (IIg)-I-2 transition improbable. However, the longer lived (2) Delta(g) state may be a good candidate for an IR laser oscillating on the (2) Delta(g) --> (IIg)-I-2 transition.
