Multiple-Scattering of Light and Photon Diffusion in a Nematic Liquid-Crystal
The multiple scattering of light as it travels through a thermally fluctuating nematic liquid crystal is studied. Within a coherent potential approximation, it is shown that the large-wavenumber behavior of the light is diffusive rather than wavelike, and the effective angle-dependent photon diffusion coefficients are calculated for the ordinary and extraordinary modes. These agree with existing experiments. Prospects for further applications of the formalism are discussed.
