Copolymer of Pyridine and Indigo - A Pi-Conjugated Polymer with Color-Center
pi-Conjugated copolymers constituted of poly(pyridine-2,5-diyl) (PPy) and indigo-6,6’-diyl units exhibits pi-pi* absorption bands at 370 and 645 nm originating from the PPy and indigo chromophores, respectively. They take a Linear structure with a large degree of depolarization (rho(v) = 0.19-0.33), and stretching of a poly(vinyl alcohol) film containing the copolymer gives a film which exhibits large (15-20) and medium (2-3) dichroic ratios for the PPy and indigo chromophores, respectively, due to the alignment of the polymer molecules along the direction of the stretching.
