Synthesis of n-octyl caprylate in the presence of various catalysts
n-Octyl caprylate was synthesized by esterification of caprylic acid with n-octanol in the presence of H2SO4, Ti(OBu)(4), H3PW12O40 and ion-exchange resins as catalysts or without any catalyst at 393-433 K and initial mole alc.-acid ratio 2.5-10. The acid catalysts gave the highest conversion of caprylic acid (above 98%) after 300 min. The Ti(OBu)(4) catalyst showed the least activity (93% after 600 min).
