Rate of Hydrogen-Atom Reaction with Ethanol, Ethanol-D(5), 2-Propanol, and 2-Propanol-D(7) in Aqueous-Solution
Arrhenius parameters for the reaction of hydrogen atoms with ethanol, ethanol-d(5), 2-propanol, and 2-propanol d(7) in aqueous solution have been determined by the use of pulse radiolysis and electron paramagnetic resonance free induction decay attenuation measurements. At 25.0 degrees C, the calculated rate constants for these compounds are (2.04 +/- 0.06) x 10(7), (2.77 +/- 0.26) x 10(6), (1.01 +/- 0.07) x 10(8), and (1.56 +/- 0.07) x 10(7) dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1) respectively, with corresponding activation energies of 24.10 +/- 0.50 (6.5-81.3 degrees C), 31.9 +/- 1.2 (22.4-79.6 degrees C), 22.00 +/- 0.26 (5.4-88.5 degrees C), and 27.45 +/- 0.30 (5.7-86.5 degrees C) kJ mol(-1). The results of this study are compared to previous reports and ab initio calculations.
