Estimation of thermodynamic parameters for Au-and Mg-based metallic glasses
The study of temperature dependent thermodynamic parameters; Gibb's free energy difference (Delta G), entropy difference (Delta S) and enthalpy difference (Delta H) between the undercooled liquid and the corresponding equilibrium solid phases has been proved to be extremely advantageous in the study of the thermodynamic behaviour of Metallic glass (MG) forming melts. In last two decades, Au-and Mgbased alloys were found to form glass phases. In present study, the three thermodynamic parameters viz., DG, DS and DH are calculated theoretically in the entire temperature range Tm (melting temperature) to T-g (glass transition temperature) for both Au- and Mg- based five samples of MGs; Au77Ge13.6Si9.4, Au53.2Pb27.5Sb19.3, Au81.4Si18.6, Mg85.5Cu14.5 and Mg81.6Ga18.4 on the basis of Taylor's series expansion. A relative study is also made between the present result and the result obtained experimentally as well as on the basis of expressions projected by the earlier researchers. An attempt is also been made to narrate the reduced glass transition temperature with glass forming ability for all five MGs. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
