Development of phosphonated alginate derivatives as coating material on titanium surface for medical application

Alginate derivative was prepared to be coated on titanium surface for improving osseointegration. It was modified by reaction of alginate and 3-aminopropylphosphonic acid. The phosphonate group of P-alginate was identified by 31P NMR. There was a specific peak derived from phosphonate group at about 24 ppm form external standard. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and water contact angle measurement were carried out for characterization of titanium surface treated with P-alginate. To confirm toxicity, cytotoxicity test was performed. Cell-adhesion test was demonstrated to improve cell adhesion on titanium surface.
