IR study of adsorption of olefins on deuterated ZSM-5
Adsorption dynamics of linear olefins (C-2-C-4) on D-ZSM-5 with no Lewis acid sites was examined below 180 K by IR spectroscopy. Below 170 K, olefins except ethene adsorbed on Bronsted acid sites (BAS) by very weak hydrogen-bonding with their alkyl groups, which were then released and migrated on the wall of the zeolite cage without any specific adsorption sites by increasing the temperature. Further heating caused the conversion to strong hydrogen bonding of C=C to BAS (pi-complex), indicating that the formation of pi-complexes is an activated process.
