Four biomass types (willow chips, alder chips, coniferous and deciduous wood chips, and palm kernel shells) were carbonized in pilot plant (capacity 120 kg/h) to yield products of improved grindability and calorific value. A decrease of moisture and volatile contents and an increase of C content were obsd. after carbonization. The pelletizing of carbonized biomass allowed to obtain formed fuel with a predetd. shape and size with increased energy d. when compared with raw biomass.
