A practical and accessible method for monitoring the grafting of polymer chains to a solid surface from solution is described. The kinetics of grafting can be followed, and the molecular weight distribution of the grafted layer can be assessed at any time during the grafting process. The method, based on gel permeation chromatography, uses finely divided solid substrate and an approximate balance between surface sites and chains in solution.
