Thin-Layer Electrodeposition of Uranium Metal from Molten LiCl-KCl
A uranium metal electrodeposition extension to the previously proposed analytical technique for determining actinides in molten salts is presented. The technique combines information from electrodeposition with the output of an alpha particle detector. This technique requires a thin actinide layer to be deposited on a metal substrate. Electrodeposition of a thorium layer has been reported previously. Electrodeposition of a thin uranium layer from molten LiCl-KCl onto nickel plates is reported in this paper using repeating chronoamperometry. Alloy formation was encountered which caused unusual deposit morphology. The effect of uranium concentration on time to deposit a fixed amount was determined. Re-usability of the detectors was shown via demonstrating the anodic stripping of the deposit verified by surface analysis (SEM-EDS). (C) 2018 The Electrochemical Society.
