Health aspects of an acute exposure to lead
A group of 37 men working as a fitters, welders or masters, underwent medical exams. after 40 days of exposure to Pb to det. the Pb and Zn contents in blood, contents of reduced glutathione in erythrocytes, and uric acid in blood serum as well as total oxidant status and oxidative stress index. An eightfold increase of Pb content in fitters blood and triple in the welders blood were obsd. The Zn concn. increased by 11% in the welders blood, as compared to the value before the exposure. In the group of fitters and welders, a decrease in the concn. of reduced glutathione by 22% and 9%, and an increase in uric acid concn. by 27% and 15% were obsd., resp. In the group of fitters, an increase of the total oxidant status value by 57% and the oxidative stress index by 70% as found. Exposure to Pb in the workplace was associated with a lack of respect for the principles of safety and health at work, which resulted in the increased exposure to Pb.
