Sustainable living education: Techniques to help advance the renewable energy transformation
Transforming the global energy system to 100% renewable energy is part of the larger societal goal of achieving a universal sustainable living society where people are striving to live in harmony with each other and with nature. Progress to a truly sustainable living - renewable energy world requires a strong workforce of renewable energy and related sustainability professionals and practitioners, and an informed public that supports the needed transformation. Education for this topic is broad: in addition to providing training and education for specific work areas, it raises awareness and provides tools for people of all ages and interests to implement and share best practices and strategies for supporting the needed transformation. The following general techniques can enhance education at all levels. Communicating interconnections - Highlighting the relationships among energy, environment, economy, and society helps illustrate multiple positive outcomes of pathways to a renewable energy world. Incorporating values - Convincing others to embrace the needed transformation is helped by recognizing that decision making is influenced more by values than facts. Respectful listening - Finding common ground, influencing others and making change requires respecting other voices. Teaching by example - Everyone teaches by example, whether one does it consciously or not, meaning everyone plays an important educator role. Sharing success stories - Sharing information about how barriers are being overcome inspires hopefulness and can enhance the work of others. Application of this set of techniques can be advanced through development of internet-based introductory guidelines supplemented with interactive learning sessions held at renewable energy and sustainability focused meetings and posted online.
