Effect of irradiation on the surface morphology of nanostructured superhydrophobic surfaces fabricated by ion beam irradiation
Superhydrophobic surfaces exhibit anti-smudging, anti-sticking, anti-icing, and self-cleaning properties. Superhydrophobic surfaces with nanostructured morphologies were fabricated using an ion beam irradiation method. The ion beam irradiation method was employed to gain insight into the irradiation effect on the surface morphologies and surface properties of the substrates. The as-prepared structured surfaces show an excellent superhydrophobic property with a high static contact angle (greater than 150 degrees). The surface properties have been investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This method provides a means to control the surface morphology. As indicated by the research results, improving the surface hydrophobicity may be an effective way of overcoming surface problems.
