Synthesis of 2-methylfuran and furan via hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol and furfural over chromite-based catalysts
Ni, Co, Fe, Mn and Cu chromites were obtained by citric acid complexation and characterized by XRD, low temp. N-2 sorption and H-2-TPR methods. Their catalytic activity was tested by furfural and furfuryl alc. gas-phase hydrogenation in a flow reactor under atm. pressure at 200-400 degrees C. The catalysts exhibited high activity (conversion about 100%). Cu-chromite showed the best selectivity for furan, whereas the Fe-chromite for 2-methylfuran. The reducibility of catalysts and their specific surface area were the main factors controlling their performance.
