Use of alginate matrices crosslinked with iron(III) ions for removal of heavy metal ions from sewage
Heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+) were adsorbed from their soln. in distd. and seepage water from sewage treatment plant on alginate matrix crosslinked with Fe(Ill) ions. Kinetics of adsorption at 20 degrees C for 48 h was studied. The adsorption followed the Freundlich isotherm model. The k(f) and 1/n equation parameters were detd. The highest values of k(f) parameter were found for Pb2+ ions in distd. water. Adsorption of Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cd(2+)ions in seepage water was higher than in distd. one. The sorption capacity of alginate/Fe3+ matrices to metal ions was arranged in series Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Cd2+ > Zn2+.
