Progress in dye sensitized solar cell by incorporating natural photosensitizers
Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been emerged as one of the promising technological developments in the field of renewable energy. The dye, as sensitizer plays an imperative role in evaluating the performance of DSSC. The use of metal-free natural dyes turns out to be convenient substitute for rare and expensive Ru-based dyes due to facile preparation, feasible extraction processes, cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. Leaves, flowers petals, barks and roots containing chlorophyll, carotenoid, betalains, anthocyanin and flavonoid pigments are the sources of natural dye extraction. This work explores the novel aspects of progress in the performance of DSSC by incorporating natural dyes as photosensitizer. Furthermore, the study presents the comprehensive overview on the application of natural sources that can be employed as sensitizing agents in DSSC rendering higher efficiencies and better stabilities.
