The global discussion about zero liquid discharge (ZLD) became highly dynamic. Knowledge about running and planned projects allows industries to identify motivations, technologies and geographical foci and to derive market potential and development approaches from it. Worldwide, 295 ZLD systems are in operation, whereby the number is increasing significantly since 2007 and further growth is expected. Reasons for the application of ZLD systems are water scarcity, legal requirements, company philosophy and cost reduction.
