Testing methods for determining the scratch resistance of firefighter's helmets
An indenter subjected to a pressure force up to 5 N on 5 mm scratch distance was used to det. the scratch resistance of 4 surfaces obtained by lamination or injection molding. The damage sizes were detd. by measuring the scratch width using a microscope as well as a profilometer. The results were compared with the results obtained by the ref. method based on the measurement of the surface area of the scratch cross-section. A strong linear correlation of the results was obsd. esp. for the laminated helmet surfaces.
