Fast proton-conducting glassy plates or films having room-temperature conductivities of approximately 10(-2) S/cm have been made from the alkali-free zirconium phosphate system using sol-gel processing. The solid amorphous superprotonic conductors are chemically stable and nonhygroscopic in ambient atmosphere even though they contain molecular water in the structure.
