The Anodic Behavior of Azide Ions at Carbon Electrodes in Neutral Electrolyte
The electro-oxidation of azide ions in aqueous neutral solutions was investigated using rotating disk carbon electrodes. Azide ions undergo irreversible electro-oxidation at carbon electrodes forming only nitrogen gas. It was observed that undissociated hydrazoic acid, present at lower pH, was electrochemically inactive in comparison to free azide ions present in neutral pH. The formation of nitrogen gas was confirmed using differential electrochemical mass spectrometry.
