We describe a method for treating the surface of stainless steel screws to avoid their cold welding in an ultra high vacuum environment. The method involves exposing the screws to an energetic flux of silver plasma produced by a vacuum arc discharge. We find that plasma deposition of about 100 angstrom or more of silver in this way provides a superior surface.
