Natural Gas Pipelines for Hydrogen Transport
Hydrogen is often described as the future energy carrier. However, it is difficult to store and transport. Consequently, the on-site generation has many advantages. Small consumers can already use either water electrolyzers or small-scale steam methane reformers. These technologies compete with bottled or trucked hydrogen, whereby the hydrogen is produced cost effectively in central world-scale plants. The electrochemical hydrogen separation technology offers an alternative for decentralized supply of renewable hydrogen by using the existing natural gas pipelines. In this article, four alternatives will be analyzed for the application of a hydrogen fueling station with a daily consumption of 1 t H-2. Product cost and carbon footprint of each alternative will be compared.
