Scrolled/Cylindrical Solution-Grown Single Crystals in Form III of Isotactic Poly(1-butene)
Form III single crystals of isotactic poly(1-butene) (iPBu-1) grown from solution with tunable size and thickness were prepared via self-seeding at different isothermal crystallization temperatures. Single crystals gradually scroll into tube-like structures when the lamellar lateral size is sufficient to close/lock the tube. Selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) helps identify the scroll axis as the (430) normal. The scrolled habit of single crystals is linked with unbalanced surface stresses at different sectors of the lamellar crystals generated by the fold encumbrance and symmetry breaking. When transposed to spherulite growth, these scrolls/tubes illustrate a lamellar growth pattern in which the fast growth direction is not radial, as observed for poly(propylene adipate) spherulites.
