Hermetic indium metal-to-glass-tube seal
A hermetic seal was achieved between a modified stainless-steel 1/2 in. SWAGELOK fitting and a 1/2 in. x 1.5 mm soda-lime glass tube. The seal was made at room temperature by compressing indium wire, sheet or pellets into a space between the outer wall of the glass tube and the conical sealing surface of the fitting. Using a helium leak detector, the leak rate between room temperature and 150 degrees C was determined to be less than 10(-9) TorrL s(-1).
